Two examples of upmarket fiction are the following:
“Station Eleven” by Emily St. John Mandel is the first in the list. In here is about a group of actors who is set to go to North America in order to be free from the pandemic flu that has affected their place.
For the literary part, it is the horror, science fiction, and suspense included. The part of the story where the characters develop hope and virtues inherent in humanity is also literary.
While the commercial part of it is when the characters have to overcome many obstacles. Another commercial part is the end of the story where every question has been answered.
“About a boy” is also an example of upmarket fiction. In this story two different people meet, one is an ageing bachelor and the other is a twelve-year-old boy.
For the literary part, it is when the plot revolves on how the relationship will go. It has a literary part on it because it is not categorized.
For the commercial part, it is when the language is used in order for the story to be more appealing to the audience. It is also talking about a “coming of age” that is commercial.
There are many categories in which book have to be classified with. Another task of an author is to designate the books they have created. Even though you designate a book into commercial, there can still be some literary part on it. Same with a book categorized as literary, because there can still be parts of it that are commercial. The good thing about upmarket fiction is that it is composed with a good writing but at the same time has commercial potential on it.
